Telling the Story of Water Through Material Culture centers on using material culture studies as a creative methodology in the development and creation of a series of installation works. While the group delved into the history of the City of Dayton and its relationship with its rivers, the overall presentation of works speaks to the greater association that humans maintain with water. The introduction of varied objects, artifacts and images furthers the sense of storytelling within the installations and helps to thread the values, beliefs, ideas, attitudes and assumptions of the larger society through the work. The seemingly darker sense of these pieces is a reaction to some of the issues that the group discovered through the course of its research and a reflection of some of the despair that exists in today’s culture derived from environmental concerns.
