In “Where are You Going Ray?” we challenge questions of identity, temporality and existence by means of light and application of a negative shadow, which appears to be emerging from and wailing back into the darkness. “Ray” as a person is a conception or an idea of a figure we may or may not know. The notion of Ray in our ability to grasp or understand Ray may extend to anyone appearing and disappearing in the metaphorical vastness of light and darkness. The project was displayed as a public video projection on The MERC Building, a former steam factory, prior to our final video/light installation at the Armory. While the concepts for the two projects share the same point of departure the form of presentation renders each as an unique entity. The display at The MERC was a public projection on a façade of an architectural site; the Armory display on the other hand is an interactive installation within an interior of an alternative exhibition space. We attempt to adapt the concept of the work to the specifics of each site, which are only two of many hidden architectural treasures of Dayton.
